Antoine leaves his provincial hometown and comes to Paris to work as a police officer. His mentor is Commandant Caroline Vaudieu, a jaded recovering alcoholic. Caroline lost her young son to meningitis some 20 years ago. If he were alive, he would have been the same age as Antoine. Caroline takes Antoine under her wings and gives him chances to excel.
